Errors in The Clutterbuck Book

This is a good book, but it's not the Bible. There are probably errors and omissions. When it was written, Witchell & Hudleston were working from research that was admittedly incomplete, and they didn't have the benefit of the internet to check with genealogists around the world.

For example, Valerie Wotton found that her records didn't jibe with the names in the book.

In the last few days I have had the opportunity to look at The Clutterbuck Book (listing families from the 1600s to the 1900s). I think everyone should be VERY CAREFUL with it. I checked John Clutterbuck & Sarah Dowman on page 144. It says that John was the son of LUKE Clutterbuck & Sarah Keen (page 143). I actually have a copy of the marriage certificate of John Clutterbuck & Sarah Dowman & it states very clearly that John Clutterbuck's father was WILLIAM !!! Despite all the effort that has gone into the book, a mistake like this should not have occurred especially when all the church records were supposedly researched. The book should be treated as an AID to further research, NOT to claiming the ancestry shown in the book. I have a Hannah Clutterbuck in my ancestry (for whom there is a baptism record of her being born to a John Clutterbuck & Sarah (maiden name not known) which was my reason for checking the above couple. Hannah's marriage certificate in 1821 "with consent of parents" shows the witness as William Clutterbuck (yes he might be her brother but I imagine it is her father!). John Clutterbuck (above) had a brother William (in the Clutterbuck book) but it does not show Hannah as a child of William !!

JUST A WARNING NOT TO TAKE THE BOOK AT FACE VALUE.

Valerie
Good advice, for sure. And that's why we're hoping that the collaborative effort of the Clutterbuck family and genealogists around the world today, connected by modern technology and access to better records, will produce a complete and accurate record of the Principal Branches of the Family of Clutterbuck.

If you've got any comments or corrections that could assist this research, or would like to collaborate, please send us an email. Thanks.

I understand the cook has errors, and I am not disputing the proof that this case is in error, but church and Index errors are common too. I have two marriages for the same man Sidney orrace Clutterbuck, on in 1917 and one in 1924. The first wife eloped and 7 years to the week Sidney - presumably claiming desertion, married again. But on both certs the Groom's father is listed by different years. So you have to ask? why? how? but it is evidence and proves that the records, whatever source cannot be regarded as gospel, the church record could equally be in error.
